「Body Description」
Nanako is a small girl, a perfect image of the stereotypical Japanese at first glance, with a girl-like face, thick black hair—dark as calligrapher’s paint. Differing from the traditional palette, however, are her almond-eyes, a grey-green in color, intense and bright, and the pink streaks adorning her hair, the shade of little girls. Her black tresses fall only slightly past her shoulders, and are often kept pulled up in pig-tails are wild variations of, kept in place only through practice and strong hair-spray.Nanako Kitamura
「Age」
Seventeen
「Height」
154cm (about five feet)
「Weight」
43 kg (about ninety-two and one half pounds)
「Body Description」
Her physique is far from mimicking a super-model (and also the stereotype), and although she is thin, Nanako has a decent figure, with a set of hips and chest, if not in ample amounts (but they aren’t out of the picture, either!). Once looking past her round face, it would be hard to argue that she’s any younger than she is, especially when adorning her beloved platform Mary-Janes (she has a collection).
Although in direct violation what could be considered an adult appearance, Nanako, flowing with the subculture of her home country, tends to wear clothing suited for a child of Victorian England. Her skirts are full, her shirts frilled and laced, and jumpers sewn in elaborate designs. Of course, all hand-made save for the small number bought “back home” in Daikanyama, the area of Tokyo housing her favorite design house’s store. She deems platform-boots, mini-top hats and headdresses essential to everyday living and various other styles offending to her elaborate existence. As for make-up, only is small amounts and either pastels or black.
「Background」
Born of a sarariman (business man) and a musician, Nanako grew up in Kyoto, Japan, living a rather simple life. Her father, for the most part, brought in the money, whereas her mother, a professional pianist, occasionally taught lessons to make her living, refusing to accept the problems of failed stardom. As a child she was encouraged to learn both art and music, and excelled at both (although at the sacrifice of her grades in most other subjects). Her father was disappointed in her progress, Japan being a very work and success-oriented country, but at the encouragement of her mother she continued along her chosen path of study. She had taken up piano at three, although soon switched to violin, and studied art with much enthusiasm, her preferred subjects being the human form and fantasy often in the state of realism coupled with vibrant colors and motifs that made one wonder if it truly was realism. She was, at best, advanced in art, if not in music, but kept a low-profile for herself, choosing to show few people her paintings and sketches.
She soon abandoned the tradition instruments her mother pressed upon her, however, trading in her violin for an electric guitar (her influence being Sugizo of the rock band Luna Sea and American musician Bon Jovi), and abandoning her painting for design sketches (influenced heavily by Japanese designer Isobe Akinori). Upon entering high school she turned in a blank entrance exam, opting to follow her dreams and ‘apprentice’ herself to a local seamstress. After six months of hemming her life away and assisting the creation of numerous kimonos (of which she would be most happy never to see again), she left, enrolling instead in a small design school in England. She attended a single year with immaculate grades in (at least, in the classes that ‘mattered’), Nanako transferred to Glaceau.
「Personality」
Nanako is an odd one, that is to say the least. Amongst her close friends back in Japan, she’s known as the leader, always scheming and always wearing a smile. She has a brilliant sense of humor, although stubborn, and hates for others to overshadow her in what she deems her talents. Although she cares little for who is best at math, she’d rather commit homicide than accept there is someone better at art or fashion design or, especially, sewing than her. A dedicated individual she has no qualms with locking herself firmly into her room and working relentlessly. In this “foreign land” however, Nanako seems a much different creature. She’s aloof from other students, choosing to keep her distance and not associating with this strange people in this strange land. It is both due to a long bout of culture-shock and that she’s ashamed—of her imperfect English, her culture, the fact that compared to most of the other girls she sees in the halls, with their light hair and tall height, she finds herself far from pretty. Although in Japan, she was known as a rebel to the social standards, there was still safety within the hordes of slightly-tanned, almond-eyed, black-haired individuals.
「Role Playing Example」
There was something daunting about foreign countries, about these lands so far from the safe streets of Kyoto, the faces like her own, the gentle language of her native tongue. It was something lost in this land of supermodels, the harsh mash of colors and sounds. Nothing like home.Yet despite rising fear, she only let a hardened mask of bravery shine through. Green eyes intense, shoulders back, manner bearing only the façade of seriousness. There was no fear here, not on the surface. Nanako would not let something such as this volatile land get to her. Instead she would be brave, a warrior. She would keep her samurai spirits. But a samurai in a dress, her sword a pencil and training in art. She would kill with images, excite with color.

*NOTES: I don’t know if my feet/inch, pounds conversions are right. I’m sorry if they aren’t, but I’m not sure of the actual numbers I’m suppose to use, and I’m poor with American measurements.
Also, Nanako’s style really does exist in Japanese street fashion. It’s considered “gothic lolita” (or gosuroli, if you want the exact roumaji). It has nothing to do with that Vladimir Nabokov novel.
Sugizo is a real guitarist. Luna Sea a real band. I assume you all know Bon Jovi exists, considering he’s rather mainstream in the West—so much so he is actually vaguely known in Japan.
Isobe Akinori is a real designer. He owns the Japanese gothic and lolita design house Baby, the Stars Shine Bright. Most recently known for having a character based off him in the novel/comic/movie-combo, 「Shimotsuma Monogatari」 (by author Takemoto Nobara, artist Kanesada Yukio, and director Nakashima Tetsuya, respectively. The English-release title is 「Kamikaze Girls」). Although apparent he’s quite different from the character.
And one more note. Since she took a bit off from school, and because of the differences in Japanese school systems, despite her age, she would be in Grade 10, not Grade 12. There are three years of junior high and three of senior high (regular high school), so entrance exams for high school are taken at fifteen. Lets say early-fifteen. So she took a year off until she was about sixteen, and then attended her first year of high school, which, in the West, is Grade 9, right (not to mention, it would only make sense to start her there versus Grade 10 because of her English)? Unless this causes a problem. Then I’ll say ‘sorry’ and hush and let you tell me what to do. I know I'm a problem. Forgive me?
